UN in Zimbabwe Remembers the Victims of Rwanda Genocide

The United Nations in Zimbabwe commemorated the 18th anniversary of the Victims of Rwanda Genocide on 17 May 2012.

Click to view photos from the event.The UN Resident Coordinator Alain Noudehou said that the day is a reminder to all of us to renew our commitment to say “never again” with one voice to such atrocities as the one that took place in Rwanda 18 years ago. In her closing remarks, the UNDP Country Director, Christine Umutoni applauded the determination of the people and leadership of Rwanda for their efforts to move on, saying that it is a testimony that where there is a will dreams can become a reality.

The commemoration in Zimbabwe brought together about 70 participants from the United Nations, Diplomatic Missions, Civil Society Organisations, the Rwandan Diaspora Community in Zimbabwe, and students. The activities during the event included observing a minute of silence, candle lighting, speeches, a screening of the famous video musical “Never Again” produced by East African artists, watching different documentaries, a photo exhibition as well as listening to the tributes by Rwanda youths residing in Zimbabwe.

The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Rwanda Genocide was adopted by, the General Assembly resolution A/RES/60/225 aiming at preventing future acts of genocide in the world.
